OAKLAND (CBS / AP) — Police said a married couple who went to Oakland to buy a luxury car they saw advertised on Craigslist are out thousands of dollars after they were robbed instead.

The Oakland Tribune reports the couple, who have not been named, were responding to an ad for a Mercedes-Benz.

The newspaper said after meeting the man who claimed to be the seller of the car around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday the two were robbed at gunpoint during what they thought was test drive of the car on Interstate 580.

Electronic items and other property were also taken before they were forced out of the car.

After being robbed, they walked down an off-ramp and called police. Investigators did not say how much money was taken, but said it was several thousand dollars.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — Oakland police shut down all westbound lanes of Interstate 580 in East Oakland for more than two hours to investigate a shooting Wednesday night, officials said.

The highway was shut down around 8:40 p.m. near the highway’s intersection with Edwards Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Oakland police said the investigation was related to suspects in two vehicles shooting at each other, but no victims hit by gunfire have been reported yet.

Authorities told CBS 5 two cars riddled with bullets were found near the Seminary Avenue exit.

Two of the westbound lanes were reopened around 10:50 p.m. All lanes reopened at about 11:30 p.m., according to the CHP.

Oakland Police were also called to the scene of a fatal shooting a mile away on Seminary Avenue and Hilton Street. The shooting was reported at 9:39 p.m.

Police found a male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not determined if the two incidents are related.

PLEASANTON (CBS SF) — A mother was killed while riding in a car driven by her 22-year-old son when the car flew off a railroad overcrossing and crashed into a hillside Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened on westbound Interstate 580 at 3:03 p.m. when the 2012 Ford was crossing the Stonecut Union Pacific Railroad overcrossing near Livermore and veered off the right of the road.

The speed of the car launched it 157 feet from the hillside where it left the road and over the railroad tracks, landing on the opposite hillside. It rolled back onto its roof.

The driver was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with major injuries, the CHP said.

His mother, identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau as 57-year-old Wanda Pelillo of Pleasanton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP has not yet determined what caused the car to leave the road.

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) – All lanes of westbound Interstate Highway 580 in Livermore reopened late Thursday morning after a fatal crash snarled traffic for nearly two and a half hours, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash was reported about 8:15 a.m. just west of the Airway Boulevard off-ramp, Officer Steve Creel said.

Initial reports indicated that a black Land Rover was traveling west on the highway at about 35 mph during the morning commute when the driver jerked the car left and it overturned, Creel said.

Two passengers were ejected from the SUV, and a third remained inside and crawled out, Creel said.

One of the two people ejected, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Creel said.

The other two victims, a man and a woman, were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley—one by air, another by land—to be treated for major injuries, he said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 8:35 a.m. when the CHP closed the westbound lanes. Some traffic was allowed to pass through on the right shoulder, Creel said.

The Sig-alert was lifted at 10:41 a.m. CHP was still investigating what caused the driver to veer suddenly.

Driver Impaled By Flying Metal Pipe On I-580 In Livermore

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) — A man was killed in a freak accident on I-580 in Livermore when a metal pipe crashed through his windshield.

Officers responded to the crash near Grant Line road shortly after 8 a.m., and found a Volvo XC70 station wagon in the median.

The 33-year-old man, identified by authorities as Michael Cox, was driving west on the highway when the metal pipe flew through the windshield of his 2003 white Volvo XC70 and impaled him.

The Volvo veered left into the center divider, went up an embankment and came to rest. The CHP arrived to find the driver deceased inside the vehicle and the engine still running, CHP Officer Tyler Hahn said.

Hahn described the pipe as about 2 feet in length and 2 inches in diameter. He said it is not clear where it came from.

“No witnesses saw it bouncing down the road, nobody’s called in to say that they lost anything of this sort,” he said.

Hahn said it appears to be a type of pipe used to help secure loads on large trucks.

Hahn called the case “completely a freak accident” and said it “literally is being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

No one else was in the Volvo at the time, and no other injuries were reported.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the CHP at (925) 828-0466 and ask for Hahn or Officer Azevedo.

Bay Bridge Sees Brunt Of Extra Traffic During BART Strike

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Thousands more motorists have been crossing Bay Area bridges each day of an ongoing BART strike that started Monday, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

The MTC, which oversees several Bay Area bridges, has been tracking motorists crossing its spans, and the Bay Bridge has been bearing the brunt of slow-moving traffic as the strike continues.

According to the MTC, there were 132,295 motorists that crossed the tolls at the Bay Bridge Tuesday, a bump up from Monday’s 128,065 motorists.

RELATED COVERAGE: Latest BART News |BART Strike Survival Guide | KCBS Traffic | Listen LIVE To KCBS

Before the strike, an earlier Monday in June saw 125,892 motorists, according to MTC officials.

MTC spokesman John Goodwin noted observations on the Bay Bridge during the strike, such as many new customers on the bridge, many of whom do not have FasTrak and were quickly filling the cash lanes.

On Tuesday, Goodwin said more cash lanes were opened to accommodate the cash toll demand, but that caused bigger back-ups for drivers with FasTrak.

He said the agency is working to find a better balance if the strike continues.

On Wednesday, Goodwin said demand is lighter on the Bay Bridge and “today has been a much better trip.” However, he advised not telling that to commuters who were stuck in traffic on Interstate 580 Wednesday morning attempting to cross the bridge from Oakland.

Other bridges also saw more motorists crossing the first two days of the strike.

The San Mateo Bridge processed 55,014 cars on Tuesday, compared to the 47,663 drivers at this time last year.

On the Carquinez Bridge there were 55,469 cars on Tuesday, which was up from a previous Monday in June that saw 52,510 vehicles.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge saw a slight increase in traffic with Tuesday rides reaching 37,862.

On the Golden Gate Bridge, fewer motorists crossed the toll plaza of the bridge than usual during the first two days of the strike.

There were 14,523 southbound drivers on the bridge on Wednesday, however that is 1,491 drivers less than the same day last week, bridge officials said.

On Tuesday, there were 12,850 cars that crossed southbound, which is 604 fewer drivers than the week before.

Goodwin said traffic patterns have been skewed with typical commute hours starting at different times with drivers trying to beat the anticipated crowds.

He said there was not any official MTC data on those rush-hour changes.

RICHMOND (CBS SF) — A motorcyclist who was killed in a solo crash near an Interstate Highway 580 off-ramp in Richmond Thursday afternoon had already been injured in an earlier crash near Stinson Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash in Richmond was reported around 3:25 p.m. at Castro Street and Tewksbury Avenue, according to CHP Officer Daniel Hill.

The rider was lying beside his motorcycle when paramedics arrived and succumbed to his injuries a short time later. He was pronounced dead at the crash site.

A witness to the crash told investigators that the rider had already been in a crash earlier on Thursday around StinsonBeach. Despite not feeling well, he decided to ride home, Hill said.

When going through Richmond, the rider veered to the right and slumped over his motorcycle’s handlebars before crashing.

Anyone with information about the crash has been asked to call the California Highway Patrol at (510) 450-3821.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — The pedestrian who was seriously injured when he was struck by a car on eastbound Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland Friday morning is an autistic boy who had been reported missing, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

The pedestrian is 12 years old and currently is in an induced coma and in critical condition, CHP Officer Sam Morgan said.

Morgan said the boy, who is from Oakland, was reported on eastbound Highway 580 near Fruitvale Avenue shortly after 6:25 a.m. when he was hit.

The incident initially prompted the closure of all eastbound lanes on Highway 580, but all lanes reopened as of about 7:45 a.m., according to the CHP.

Morgan said the boy was hit by at least one car.

He said traffic came to a stop but a second collision occurred when a driver who wasn’t paying attention struck several other cars.

Two people were treated for minor injuries and pain from the crash, Morgan said.

Morgan said it doesn’t appear that the driver who struck the boy did anything wrong.

He said the incident was “a very tragic situation” and the boy may have been disoriented.

Oakland police Sgt. Arturo Bautista confirmed that the boy had been reported missing but said he did not immediately have any additional details about him.

Gridlock Throughout Bay Area On 1st Day Of BART Strike

$

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — The Friday evening commute was a little longer than usual for many Bay Area commuters, with would-be BART riders scrambling for alternate forms of transportation to get to and from work due to the BART strike.

Bay Area traffic delays increased around 30 percent above normal between 5 and 10 a.m. Friday, according to Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus.

The largest increase was seen on Interstate Highway 80 in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, Haus said.

Interstate highways 580 and 880 saw delays around twice as high as normal around 7 a.m., and the carpool lane on Interstate Highway 80 leading up to the Bay Bridge saw around 50 to 100 percent more traffic than a typical Friday, Haus said.

Caitlyn McKenzie arrived at the West Oakland BART station around 8:45 a.m. only to find out that buses were filled to capacity.

She lives in West Oakland and works as an infant toddler teacher at Bright Horizons, a day care center near The Embarcadero.

She managed to catch a bus to Emeryville and boarded an Alameda-Contra Costa Transit bus to the Transbay Terminal getting to work around noon.

“A lot of people have a lot of animosity towards (the BART employees) but I support their careers even though it’s an inconvenience for the Bay Area,” she said.

McKenzie made a copy of her coworker’s bus service pass that she used to board from San Francisco Friday evening.

The backup was felt in San Francisco, where city streets were heavily congested heading into the evening commute, especially at freeway entrances, according to a city transit official.

The California Highway Patrol reported heavy traffic on the Bay Bridge Friday evening.

Brentwood resident John Tanwani was on a bus that departed from San Francisco to West Oakland around 6:15 p.m.

From there he said he would take another bus to the Concord BART station.

He works as a data analyst for U.S. Department of Homeland Security off of Sutter Street.

Tanwani said it was “ridiculous” that BART management and its unions are trying to gain “control over the work rules.”

As he looked at the flood of cars attempting to get onto the Highway 80 on-ramp at Bryant Street he predicted his commute would take two hours.

With many drivers seeking alternate routes due to the BART strike, however, the congestion is extending to other corridors, said Randy Rentschler, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

Traffic on Friday has been heavy on the Highway 880 corridor and on state highways 24 and 37, among other places, Rentschler noted.

“What’s happening now is [U.S. Highway] 101 in Marin is getting backed up because people are taking [Highway] 580, and 580 is backed up,” Rentschler said.

“So even though BART is far away, even though you don’t take it, people are coming in from out of town,” Rentschler said.

Newark resident Ray Perez was on a bus from West Oakland to Fremont Friday evening around 7:15 p.m.

Perez and his wife took BART’s temporary bus service for the first time from the Fremont BART station Friday morning around 5:15 a.m.

He got into San Francisco two hours later where he works as an internal security manager at Bvlgari on Stockton Street.

During the July BART strike Perez drove into the city but “parking was a nightmare, especially in the city.” He finds the bus service “more relaxing.”

He was “frustrated” that BART employees are on strike and “thought the mediator said there was promising developments taking place.

“They’re not making any effort now to go back to the negotiating table and settle their differences,” Perez said.

Union officials presented a proposal to BART management Friday evening on a number of key issues that, if signed off, would have allowed trains to run as early as 10 p.m. Friday.

Management rejected that proposal, claiming it was “essentially a repeat of what was given at the bargaining table.”

2 Dogs Killed, 5 Rescued In San Leandro Marijuana Grow House Fire

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) – Firefighters found a marijuana grow operation while battling a two-alarm blaze that killed two dogs at a hillside home in unincorporated San Leandro Monday morning, a fire spokeswoman said.

The fire was reported at 9:56 a.m. at a three-story, single-family home in the 2000 block of Altamont Road, near Darius Way, Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

Crews could see thick smoke around the home as they were responding to the scene, Knowles said.

A male resident was at home when the fire started, but was able to get out of the house prior to firefighters’ arrival, Knowles said.

The resident suffered minor injuries when he attempted to go back inside to rescue seven dogs from the blaze, according to Knowles. Two dogs died in the fire and the five others survived.

The fire was contained within 50 minutes, according to Knowles.

Knowles said the fire started when heat lamps being used for the marijuana grow ignited vapors coming from a faulty gas line connected to an outdoor barbecue pit.

According to Knowles, a neighbor heard an explosion, which was the sound of a wall being blown out. The fire then spread to the rest of the house.

Knowles said the blaze caused major damage to all three floors, as well as the roof, attic, and porch.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the marijuana grow operation, but Knowles said the resident had not been arrested as of Monday afternoon.

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) – A driver has been arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter after allegedly causing a fiery four-car crash that killed one person on Interstate Highway 580 Thursday morning, a California Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported at 10:04 a.m. just east of North Livermore Avenue. The incident initially blocked traffic on both sides of the highway and a Sig-alert was issued at 10:14 a.m., CHP Officer Steve Creel said.

The driver in custody, Primitivo Garcia, 53, of Livermore, was arrested on the felony charges and booked into the Santa Rita Jail after being treated for his injuries at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, Creel said.

The crash appears to have occurred when a Hummer driven by Garcia struck a Jeep Cherokee from behind, Creel said.

Those two cars hit another two cars, and the Jeep burst into flames. The fire spread to the Hummer, but Garcia and his passenger, a man in his 20s, were able to escape.

The pair was taken to Eden Medical Center with what appeared to be minor injuries, Creel said.

Emergency crews were eventually able to approach the Jeep and determined there was at least one deceased person inside. Authorities have not yet released that person’s identity.

Traffic was snarled for hours while the crash was investigated. Eastbound lanes were completely cleared around 11:30 a.m., but the westbound lanes were not cleared until about 2 p.m., when the Sig-alert was canceled.

Richmond Highway 580 Off-Ramp Reopens After Tanker Truck Crash, Diesel Spill

$

RICHMOND (CBS SF) – An Interstate Highway 580 off-ramp in Richmond has reopened and cleanup is nearly completed after a morning crash involving a double-tanker truck caused a diesel fuel spill, police and hazardous materials officials said.

Around 7:45 a.m., a flatbed truck hit the parked tanker truck in the 500 block of Hoffman Boulevard, puncturing one of the tanks and causing it to leak diesel fuel, Richmond police spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

The driver of the flatbed truck and a passenger suffered cuts and other minor injuries and were treated at the scene, she said.

About 1,400 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the tanker truck into storm drains and a nearby culvert, and prompted the closure of the 500 block of Hoffman Boulevard, as well as the Harbour Way off-ramp on eastbound Highway 580, according to Contra Costa County hazardous materials specialist Adam Springer.

The off-ramp reopened around 1 p.m., and Hoffman Boulevard was expected to reopen around 4 p.m., after crews finished mopping up the spilled diesel, Abetkov said.

A county hazardous materials team also used a vacuum truck to suck out the remaining diesel in the tanker truck, Springer said.

He said the spilled diesel is “hazardous, but not as hazardous as gasoline.”
